Eastern Purple Coneflower, Purple Coneflower
Coneflowers (Echinacea spp.) are native to North America.
A popular perennial with smooth, 2-5 ft. stems and long-lasting, lavender flowers. All coneflowers have a daisy-like appearance with a prominent cone or center that is made up of tiny dark brown to brown-orange florets. The cones are surrounded by petals that tend to droop in the species forms
The genus name is from the Greek echinos, meaning "hedgehog," an allusion to the spiny, brownish central disk.
The healing properties of the flowers of Echinacea species are used to make an extremely popular herbal tea, purported to help strengthen the immune system; this was an important plant to the Native Americans to treat many ailments. Echinacea has been shown to improve immunity, blood sugar, anxiety, inflammation, and skin health. It may even have anti-cancer properties. . Often cultivated, Purple Coneflower is a showy, easily grown garden plant that has a pleasant sweetish smell and a faint aroma that characterizes the Echinacea herb
Several pollinators are attracted to the flower, especially butterflies. Leave some of the flower heads on to produce seeds for the birds. The Coneflower inspired the creation of the Favor Flower Handmade Soap Collection. These handmade soaps embrace island life and local lore, combined with the mind and soul healing herbs, with silly little flower face that as if a butterfly landed on its nose bringing you an island smile while washing your hands.
