Dune Prickly-Pear Flower - Is a small prickly pear cactus of the Atlantic Coastal Plants from North Carolina, and across parts of northern Florida to Mississippi. The flowers are completely yellow. Fruits become red-purple and are barrel-shaped. Seeds are tan, subcircular, flattened, and 4 to 6 mm in diameter with a slight girdle.
They have two types of prickles: long, visible spines and “glochids,” which are smaller, barbed, hair-like spikes that are hard to see and just as hard to remove from skin. As with sand spurs, their spines often attach to passing animals and people, helping to spread them and extend their territory. The spines also protect the fruit from being eaten by animals.
Native pollinators and honeybees love the nectar of the flowers, which they help pollinate. The petals can be added to salads.
Healing properties are promoted for treating diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and hangovers. It's also touted for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
Prickly pears have edible fruit known as ‘cactus fruit’, ‘cactus fig’, ‘Indian fig’ and ‘tuna’, and are mainly red in color, although other varieties include yellowy-orange and green, and are high in Vitamin C.
This painful but beautiful flower inspired the creation of the Favor Flower Handmade Soap Collection. These handmade soaps embrace island life and local lore, combined with the mind and soul healing herbs, with silly little flower faces that are sure to bring island smiles while washing your hands.
